Batik is an ancient art which uses wax and dyes to create a visual magic on fabrics. It is an art appreciated all over the world. Overall the process is one where firstly the wax is used for creating designs on certain pre-defined areas on the fabric. Secondly the fabric is dyed and then the wax is removed by scraping or by boiling the cloth so that the wax peels off. The result is a beautiful piece of cloth with some very unconventional designs. Warli art is practiced by the Warli tribe of Dagra and Nagar Haveli near Gujarat. It is a much loved tribal art style that was formerly done on mud walls of hamlets, on paper and canvas, and is now imbibed by designers on sarees and dress materials. The look is similar to Batik, and often depicts the sun and moon, which are the essential deities of the Warli tribe.
